Folding Electric Bikes UK

Folding Electric Bikes for UK Commuters

A folding electric bike solves the two problems that stop most people buying one: where to keep it, and how to combine it with a train or a car. Every bike on this page folds down for storage in a flat, a hallway, a car boot, a motorhome or under a desk — from compact 14-inch models at £395 up to full-suspension 26-inch folders.

How to choose a folding e-bike

  • Folded size beats wheel size. If it has to fit a specific boot or cupboard, measure that space first and compare it against the folded dimensions on each product page.
  • Weight is the thing people underestimate. Folding e-bikes run from roughly 23kg to 30kg. If you'll carry it up stairs or lift it onto a train, every kilo counts.
  • Small wheels ride differently. 14 and 16-inch wheels are easiest to store but feel every pothole. 20-inch is the usual compromise; 26-inch folders ride like a normal bike but fold bulkier.
  • Battery capacity buys range. A 7.5Ah pack suits short urban hops. For longer commutes look for 13Ah or more.
  • Check the frame lock. A folding hinge is a wear point — look for a solid clamp and check it before every ride.

Are folding electric bikes road legal in the UK?

Folding makes no difference to legality. What matters is whether the bike meets the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle rules: a continuous rated motor output of no more than 250W, assistance that cuts out at 15.5mph (25km/h), and working pedals that must be turned for the motor to help. Bikes meeting all three need no licence, tax, insurance or registration, and can be ridden from age 14. Check the current GOV.UK EAPC rules and the specification on each product page before riding on public roads.

Folding electric bike FAQs

How small do folding electric bikes fold?

It varies by model. A 16-inch folder such as the DYU C2 folds to roughly 81 × 44 × 57cm, which fits most car boots and a standard hallway cupboard. Larger 20-inch and 26-inch folders take noticeably more space. Exact folded dimensions are listed on each product page.

Can I take a folding e-bike on a UK train?

Most UK train operators carry folded bicycles free of charge and outside the usual cycle reservation rules, provided the bike is folded and stored in the luggage area. Policies differ by operator, so check with yours before travelling — and bear in mind an e-bike is heavier than a standard folder.

Are folding e-bikes less sturdy than normal ones?

A well-made folding frame is perfectly safe for everyday riding, but the hinge is an extra component and should be checked and kept tight. Folders generally suit road and path riding rather than rough off-road use.

Which is the cheapest folding electric bike you sell?

The DYU D3F at £395 is the lowest-priced folding model in the range. See all electric bikes under £500 for the wider budget selection.
