Compare models advertised with 250W motors. A motor rating alone does not prove a bike can be ridden on public roads as an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC). Check the exact version supplied, its maximum assisted speed, throttle operation, required markings and any relevant approval before purchase.

What are the EAPC rules?

According to GOV.UK, an EAPC must have usable pedals, a continuous rated motor output no higher than 250W and no motor propulsion above 15.5 mph. Riders must be at least 14. A bike that can propel itself without pedalling may require approval even below 15.5 mph. A non-EAPC is treated as a motorcycle or moped for road use, with registration, tax, licence, helmet and insurance requirements.

Check the model, not just the category

Product pages may describe a throttle or a supplier assisted speed above 25 km/h. In those cases, do not assume that pedalling, a menu setting or a “250W” label makes the bike road legal.
