Off-Road Electric Bikes UK

Off-Road Electric Bikes and Electric Dirt Bikes

These are the high-power machines: electric bikes and electric dirt bikes built for private land, permitted off-road tracks and green-lane use. The range runs from fat-tyre models around £500 up to 6000W dirt bikes at £1,599, all held in UK stock with free UK mainland delivery on orders of £50 and over.

Read this first: most bikes on this page exceed the UK Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle limits, which makes them motor vehicles in law. Riding one on a public road, pavement, cycle path or bridleway without type approval, registration, tax, insurance and the correct licence is an offence — use them on private land with the landowner's permission. Always check the motor rating and assisted-speed figures on the individual product page before you ride anywhere public.

Why buy an off-road electric bike?

The trade-off is simple. On a high-power machine you give up the right to ride on public roads, and in exchange you get power, torque and speed that a 250W EAPC cannot legally deliver. For riders with access to private land, a farm, a motocross track or a permitted off-road site, that is a straightforward win.

  • Hill climbing. A 250W motor struggles on steep loose ground. A 750W or 3500W motor does not.
  • Torque under load. Matters when carrying weight, towing, or riding sand, mud and deep gravel.
  • Sustained speed off-road. EAPC assistance cuts out at 15.5mph, which is limiting on open private ground.
  • Full suspension and hydraulic brakes. Standard on most models here, rather than an upgrade.

How to choose

  • Decide the category first. A fat-tyre e-bike with pedals (Hidoes, KOOLUX) rides like a bicycle with far more power. A dirt bike (VIPCOO H2, H3, H6) has no pedals and rides like a light electric motorcycle. They are not interchangeable.
  • Match power to terrain. 500W to 750W suits tracks, towpaths and firm trails. 3500W and above is genuine motocross-style territory and needs space and experience.
  • Check whether the bike has a selectable mode. Some models ship in a road-legal 250W setting with a higher-power mode for private land only. The setting you ride in determines what the law treats it as.
  • Battery capacity drives run time. Compare amp-hours at the same voltage. A 48V 25Ah pack lasts considerably longer under load than 48V 13Ah.
  • Weight matters more than you think. The heavier dirt bikes are around 50kg or more. Consider how you will transport, lift and store it.
  • Protective equipment is not optional. At these speeds and weights, a proper helmet, gloves and body protection are basic requirements.

What makes an electric bike road legal in the UK?

An electric bike is only exempt from registration, tax, insurance and licensing if it is an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle: continuous rated motor output no greater than 250W, assistance cutting out at 15.5mph (25km/h), working pedals that must be turned for the motor to assist, and a rider aged 14 or over.

Anything outside those limits is a motor vehicle. See the current GOV.UK EAPC rules and our UK e-bike law guide.

Off-road electric bike FAQs

Can I ride a high-power e-bike on a public road if I keep the speed down?

No. Legality is determined by the motor's continuous rated output and the bike's construction, not by how fast you choose to ride. A 750W bike ridden slowly is still a 750W bike in law. Our guide explains why a controller limit does not change a motor's rating.

What about bridleways, byways and forestry tracks?

A motor vehicle needs the same registration, insurance and licensing on a byway as on a road, and is not permitted on a bridleway or footpath. Access rights vary by route and landowner, so confirm the status of the specific route before riding.

Do I need insurance?

For private land use insurance is not legally required, but specialist off-road or recreational-vehicle cover is worth considering given the value of these machines. Standard home contents cover rarely extends to them.

What is the difference between an off-road e-bike and an electric dirt bike?

An off-road e-bike keeps pedals and a bicycle frame, so it can be pedalled if the battery runs down. An electric dirt bike has no pedals, uses motorcycle-style wheels and suspension, and is closer to a light electric motorcycle. Pick based on whether you want a bicycle with more power, or a motorcycle.

How long do the batteries last between charges?

It depends heavily on throttle use, terrain, rider weight and temperature. Supplier range figures on each product page are best-case estimates on flat ground, so plan against the lower end, particularly in winter. Our battery range calculator converts volts and amp-hours into realistic estimates.

Can I return one if it is not suitable?

Yes. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel an online order, subject to our returns policy.
