Road legal or off-road? Read this first

Fat tyres and road legality are separate questions, and mixing them up is the most common mistake buyers make here. A bike can only be ridden on public roads and cycle paths as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle if it has a continuous rated motor output of no more than 250W, assistance that cuts out at 15.5mph (25km/h), and pedals that must be turned for the motor to assist.

250W road-legal fat tyre bikes on this page include the VARUN M26-2 Pro, VARUN S20-2 Pro and ZONVEER M20 2.0. These can be used on public roads in pedal-assist mode.
Higher-powered models — including the Hidoes 500W, 750W and 1200W range — exceed the EAPC limits. They are legally motor vehicles and should be used on private land with the landowner's permission unless registered, taxed and insured.
The Aairsk X5 has a selectable setting: road legal at 250W / 25km/h, private land only in its unlocked 500W / 40km/h mode.

What fat tyres cost you

Range. Wider tyres mean more rolling resistance, so expect a modest range penalty against a narrow-tyre bike with the same battery.
Weight. Fat tyre bikes are heavier and harder to carry upstairs or lift onto a rack.
Storage. They take more space. If that's a problem, the folding fat-tyre models — SAMEBIKE C05 Pro and VARUN S20-2 Pro — are the compromise.
Pedalling unassisted. Noticeably harder work if the battery runs flat.

What counts as a fat tyre?

Generally anything 3.5 inches wide or more. Most bikes on this page run 4.0-inch tyres, in either 20-inch or 26-inch wheel sizes.

Are fat tyre electric bikes good for UK roads?

Yes, particularly in winter. The extra contact patch and lower pressure give better grip on wet, greasy and loose surfaces, and the tyre volume absorbs potholes. The trade-off is weight and a small reduction in range.

Do fat tyres reduce range?

Slightly, yes. Higher rolling resistance uses more energy at the same speed. Battery capacity matters more than tyre width overall — a 48V 15Ah fat-tyre bike will still outlast a 36V 10Ah bike on narrow tyres.

Are fat tyre e-bikes legal in the UK?

The tyre has nothing to do with it. Legality depends on motor rating, assistance cut-off speed and pedal operation. Several models on this page are road legal at 250W; others are for private land only. Check each product page.

What tyre pressure should I run?

Lower pressure gives more grip and comfort on loose ground; higher pressure rolls faster on tarmac. Stay within the range printed on the tyre sidewall, and check pressures regularly — underinflation is the most common cause of poor range.
